40 years

Breeding and raising dogs with generations of practical experience.

Four decades working with American Kennel Club dogs.

Family focused

Puppies are raised with affection and everyday companionship.

More than breeding

Rescue work, grooming, stud service, and training knowledge.

Our story

From Dachshunds to Mastiffs to Yorkies

Our experience began with Dachshunds, grew through years with English Mastiffs, and eventually led us to the spirited little dogs we raise today: Yorkshire Terriers.

Along the way, we built a life around dogs—breeding, training, grooming, stud service, and rescue.

Puppies worth coming back for

Seeing a Yorkie head home in loving arms is one of the best parts of what we do. Riley's happy send-off with Joe and Sue is a memory we're proud to share.

The couple pictured by their Jeep came back for a second McCoy puppy from a later litter. Both puppies are beloved companions, with no plans for breeding—they were simply so impressed with their first puppy that they wanted another. Two different McCoy families have now done exactly the same thing.

Janene & Hazel

Some love stories start before the puppy even comes home. Janene couldn't wait — so before Hazel was old enough to leave, she came out for a visit. She got to meet both of Hazel's parents, Gemma and Waylon Coal, and hold her tiny girl for the very first time.

We always encourage home visits. Come see your puppy as they're growing up — there's nothing like watching them change week to week before they come home for good.

And now? Hazel's home — 5.5 months old, spoiled rotten, and living her best life. 🐾

Here’s what happens next

From first call to homecoming

Reach out to Eric and Crystal to talk about the puppies and ask your questions. If the fit feels right, you’ll arrange a time to come meet the puppies at the McCoy home—puppy visits are by appointment.

1. Start a conversation

Call Eric and Crystal to learn about current availability, personality, care, and whether a tiny Yorkie is a good fit for your family.

2. Meet by appointment

Choose a time to visit the McCoy home in Hillsdale and spend time with the puppies before making your decision.

3. Go home prepared

Every puppy goes home vet-checked, with shots current, dewclaws removed, tail docked, and an AKC Reunite temperature-sensing microchip.

Reserved with a deposit

A deposit reserves a puppy who is not yet old enough to go home. Deposits are non-refundable, with one fair exception: if McCoy’s cannot meet the need you reserved for, your deposit is returned. For example, if you reserve from an unborn litter hoping for a female and no female puppy is born, you receive the deposit back. Call for the details before reserving.

Home at the right time

Puppies usually go home at 10–12 weeks. Eric and Crystal choose the safest timing for each family; when a home has larger dogs or small children, they may keep a tiny puppy a little longer so it is stronger and less likely to be hurt. Homecoming is guided by the puppy’s well-being, not just the calendar.

Hand delivery available

Eric and Crystal can personally deliver your puppy near or far. The new family covers round-trip travel for Eric, Crystal, and the puppy, along with a delivery fee. Call to talk through the destination, timing, and details.

Yorkie know-how

What life with a tiny Yorkie can be like

After 40 years with AKC dogs, we know a good match starts with honest expectations. Yorkshire Terriers may be small, but they are bright, involved companions who thrive on attention and patient guidance.

Temperament

Expect a lively, affectionate little dog with a big personality. Individual puppies differ, which is why we share what we see in each puppy.

Everyday care

The Yorkie's fine coat benefits from regular grooming. Their small size also calls for thoughtful handling, close supervision, and a home prepared for a tiny companion.

A responsible start

We send families home knowing the puppy's current care: shots, dewclaw and tail status, microchip, personality, and expected size. Adult weight is an estimate, not a guarantee.

Treats we recommend

We keep treats simple: chicken-wrapped sweet potato from A Heart For The Paws, made in Idaho — USA chicken breast hand-wrapped around sweet potato, dehydrated in small batches. Two ingredients, nothing else in the bag. Sweet potato's fiber helps with digestion. Keep treats under 10% of daily food: for a tiny Yorkie that's about half a strip a day — we break ours into smaller pieces for training.

A thoughtful match

About McCoy's

Breeding is in the family

Our story runs from a father's AKC Dachshunds, to a son's English Mastiffs, to the Yorkshire Terriers at the heart of our home today.

Second-generation breeder

It started with my dad's Dachshunds

I grew up around breeding. When I was a child, my dad raised AKC long-haired and short-haired Dachshunds in different colors—before many of those colors were popular. Watching him work taught me that knowing a breed means paying attention to the whole dog: health, temperament, structure, behavior, and the care that happens every day.

Dachshunds

My first lessons came at home, alongside my dad and his AKC Dachshunds. That's where the family tradition began.

English Mastiffs

When I was old enough to move out on my own, I began raising English Mastiffs. Working with such powerful, sensitive dogs deepened my understanding of training, trust, and temperament.

Harley

One of the unforgettable ones was Harley—a 225-pound male with a 30-inch neck. I had to buy him a 32-inch horse collar. He drew a crowd everywhere we went: a true gentle giant who also understood exactly what I asked of him.

Yorkshire Terriers

Then a little Yorkie named Tiger came into my life. He was small enough to ride everywhere with me and had enough personality to begin a whole new chapter.

Across it all, one thread has stayed constant: 40 years working with AKC dogs and a belief that every puppy deserves an experienced start and a family ready to understand the dog in front of them.

The Yorkie chapter begins

Then came Tiger

I had a friend who was a nurse. She knew a couple who both worked the same 14-hour shift, and they had this little Yorkie named Tiger. Tiger didn't like being left alone for 14 hours, so they did the right thing and found somebody who had more time for him. I had just had back surgery, and they decided I was a good candidate.

So I took him in—and let me tell you, that little dog had such a personality. He was tired of being left at home. He wanted to go everywhere with me, and I mean everywhere. He didn't care if it was on a cigarette boat going 50 miles an hour or on the back of a Harley. He didn't care where we were going; he just wanted to go.

Tiger was a rehomed little dog with a huge personality. He stole my heart, and that's how my Yorkie chapter began.

Loss and new beginnings

Samson & Delilah

Tiger had such a little personality. When he passed, it took me a while to get over losing him. After I moved to Michigan, I decided I wanted another Yorkie—but first I happened to come across a Massweiler, half Mastiff and half Rottweiler, and adopted him. His name was Samson.

About five days later, I found my Yorkie, Delilah. People thought I was crazy. They said, “We thought you were looking for a Yorkie!” I raised Samson and Delilah together, and it made them both wonderful, gentle dogs. Delilah ran the house. She would take Samson's bone and wouldn't let him get it back from her. It was so funny watching that tiny Yorkie boss around such a big dog.

Samson developed cancer and had to be put to sleep when he was only three and a half years old. Losing him so young was devastating. But the love he and Delilah shared is part of the family story that still guides how every animal here is raised.

Samson & Delilah — puppy days

Where Crystal's Yorkie story began

Crystal & Tucker

Since I was a little girl, I had always dreamed of having a Yorkie—or a monkey. Well, the monkey was out of the question, LOL, but a Yorkie wasn't. I waited until my children were teenagers, and I saved for almost two years to finally afford a real Yorkie. I picked him out when he was five weeks old—well, of course, he picked me, LOL.

He was a perfect gentleman. He didn't like car rides at all, but he had a wonderful wardrobe to choose from. He wasn't a fan of shoes—of course, his mommy (me) didn't like them either, so who was I to tell him different? He had a favorite little blanket that went everywhere with him, and a favorite ball with a bell in it that he loved to play with.

He loved to sit with me on my back-porch swing after I got home from work—we did that for an hour every day. He slept with me under the covers and kept me warm and safe. And you could come in the house, but as soon as you tried to leave, he'd go for your leg—well, try to rip it off! For such a tiny guy, he just didn't want you to leave the house.

He was my best friend. He saved my life more times than I can count, and I miss him so very much. When Eric and I rekindled—he had two Yorkies of his own—it felt like we were meant to be a family. Here we are years later with a big, strong furry family and lots of critter brothers and sisters. I think about Tucker every single day, and I miss him just as much as ever. He's in my heart forever.

And the Yorkies are what brought us back together. Eric and I had dated in high school, and years later a mutual friend, Marcy, posted a photo of a foster Yorkie on Facebook. We both commented, got to talking—and the rest is history. Gemma was the first Yorkie we picked out together.

The foundation of McCoy's

First Delilah, and Lennon the lover

I picked Delilah up from Fargo's Yorkies. To me, if you want an AKC Yorkshire Terrier, Delilah is the perfect Yorkie. She has the perfect hair, the perfect color—just a beautiful, dark-colored little girl who grew to 5.8 pounds.

Her first litter was with a friend's little Yorkie named Harley, who was smaller than she was. After that beginning, I went down to lower Indiana and bought Lennon to become my stud dog. His mother was imported from Ukraine, and his father was a tiny black-haired Yorkie.

Lennon the lover—that's what I call him. He's dual-registered with the AKC and ACA, and he's had more than nine AKC litters. With his most recent litter, the AKC required a DNA test because he'd sired so many. That verification is part of the record behind my little stud. He's about eight and a half years old now.

Lennon and Delilah really built McCoy's Michigan Yorkies. Everything that followed grew from the care, character, and experience they brought into our home.

Saylor Rayne came after Gemma. She's a chocolate AKC Yorkshire Terrier and weighs 5.3 pounds when she isn't pregnant—a loving girl and devoted mama.

Waylon Coal

Waylon Coal came next: a black-and-white tuxedo AKC Yorkshire Terrier with an adventurous streak. He loves riding on the Harley in his doggles and goes everywhere with Eric and Crystal, no matter what they're doing. He may live for adventure, but he cleans up handsome too.

This is where Waylon's call to ride started—before he graduated to the Harley in his doggles.

The story comes full circle

Giving back to the Yorkie community

We try to save every animal we come across that needs help—and yes, that includes humans.

— Eric McCoy

Lennon and Delilah built McCoy's Michigan Yorkies, and then it became a rescue too. We started rescuing Yorkies to give back to the Yorkie community—the same community that gave me so much when a rehomed little dog named Tiger first came into my life.

It started with taking one dog in. Today, the mission is still led by the dogs: raise them with love, understand the one in front of you, and be there when a Yorkie needs another chance.

No rescues are currently available for adoption.

Gracie Mae is the only rescue in our home today, and she's permanent family—not adoptable and not going anywhere. The stories below are past happy endings. If you have a Yorkie in need of rescue, please reach out to us.

Our mission: McCoy’s Animal Rescue exists to save every animal we come across that needs help — dogs, cats, chickens, pigs, ducks, geese, turkeys, rabbits, fish, and more — through rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption into loving homes.

Pepper & Little Bit: home at last

Pepper and Little Bit spent their whole lives with one person — an 88-year-old who loved them — and just days ago she passed away. They had nowhere to go. So they came home with us, the way every McCoy’s rescue does.

Pepper is a gentle 14-year-old girl with a silky golden-tan coat. Little Bit is a scruffy, sweet 9-year-old boy whose little tongue pokes out — and everybody who meets him falls for him. Neither of them came with any vet records at all, and both need dental work, all of their shots, blood work, and full senior checkups at Fieldstone Veterinary Care with Dr. Mike before anything else.

Right now they're safe, warm, and loved at our house in Hillsdale — and every merch order and donation helps pay for the care they missed.

Gracie Mae stayed family

Gracie Mae is a 13-year-old Yorkie Poo and the first dog we ever rescued. We may have taken her in intending to help her find a home, but Eric and Crystal knew she was already where she belonged.

Gracie Mae will never be rehomed. She still lives here as the grandma of the house, right alongside Delilah.

Our second rescue

Patience changed Nico's life

Nico came to us with real challenges: potty-training troubles and food aggression. Eric and Crystal worked patiently and consistently with him on both, giving him the structure and understanding he needed to become a different dog.

Once Nico was ready, he went home with a lovely family who loves him very much.

A first dog for five excited kids

Remy knew he was home

Remy came to us when he was about nine months old. His mom called because she was working too much, and that little dog was going stir-crazy in an apartment. We took him in, evaluated him, and found he really didn't need much work. He was already up to date on his shots—he just needed the right home and people with time for him.

We found him a wonderful family with five kids, the oldest around sixteen. Remy was the first dog those kids had ever owned, and they were so excited to meet him. The minute he walked into their house, he started running around and rubbing himself all over the furniture like he was saying, “This is my home now.”

He knew exactly where he was supposed to be—and he's been loved there ever since.

Jensen, a small black and tan Yorkshire Terrier, looking up from a patterned rug
Little Jensen, coming out of his shell.

A Hillsdale happy ending

Little Jensen found his lap

Little Jensen was brought to us by a lady who couldn't take care of him any longer. He had a little club foot, a steel rod in his front leg, and he was very timid. We had him for quite some time, and being around all our other Yorkies, he had no choice but to come out of his shell—and he did.

Jensen was adopted right here in Hillsdale by a wonderful lady who had lots of experience with Yorkies but had never had one that wanted to sit on her lap all the time. Well, she got her lap dog, because that's all Jensen wants to do.

Now they're the best of partners, sitting together to watch the sunrise every morning over coffee. No coffee for Jensen, of course—he gets wound up enough as it is, especially when treats are involved.

Sawyer's fresh start

Sawyer was found abandoned in a baseball field, estimated to be eight to ten years old. The person who found him tracked down his owner, but she didn't want him back. He had never been to a veterinarian and came to us with no papers, history, or trail to follow.

We took Sawyer to Fieldstone Veterinarian in Jonesville, where Dr. Mike helped us give him the care he'd missed. Sawyer was neutered, received a full round of vaccinations including rabies, and had every painful tooth extracted. He has no teeth now and will eat soft food for life, but he can live a normal, comfortable life.

Today, Sawyer is home with a wonderful older couple who love him the way he always should have been loved.

The original “Sawyer looking for a home” post—and it worked. This is the post that found him his family.
